Statistics suggest that up to 80% of people who try to quit have at least one relapse before achieving long-term sobriety.?? In some cases, it may only be a momentary lapse which we, in recovery circles, refer to as a slip. It differs from a full-blown relapse in that the person immediately regrets the action. It may be the result of something that happened on the spur of the moment or when the persons focus was somehow shaken. But, it is ultimately characterized by the fact that the individual wants to correct the mistake immediately. By contrast, a relapse suggests that a person has fallen back into old behaviors. It is most often used to describe when a person who has been sober for some time returns to alcohol or drugs and is less able to stop. Reasons for Slips and Relapses In some cases, people will slip because they dont have the tools to overcome certain emotional situations. They may have had a horrible day and use that as a justification to start drinking again. Alternately, they may be overwhelmed by cravings that frequently occur during early recovery.?? In other cases, people will use alcohol or drugs to punish those around them for pushing them back into old behaviors. It allows the individual to put the blame on someone else rather than acknowledging the addiction is an issue of its own. The main point about a slip is that the sense of regret is almost immediate. The problem arises when the slip turns into a full-blown relapse and the total abandonment of ones sobriety. When this happens, the ability to turn things around becomes increasingly difficult for several reasons: Once a person starts to drink or use drugs again, his or her ability to make rational decision decreases. The persons motivation for sobriety was probably low in the first place, making it even more difficult to reapproach recovery a second time. The relapse will often confirm to the individual that he or she cant overcome the addiction. Those who supported the recovery in the first place may be less willing to do so the second time around. Some people will fool themselves into thinking that they can achieve sobriety again when things are better, and they are in a stronger place.Others will convince themselves that they need to hit rock bottom in order to fully commit to sobriety, failing to understand that it is simply a ploy to buy time and perpetuate the same behaviors. How to Deal With a Slip or Relapse The best way to prevent a slip from becoming a relapse is to act immediately. It is something you cannot do alone, and the seriousness of the slip should never be downplayed by you or those around you. However serious or minor the slip may have been, it is a clear sign that something is wrong and that there are issues that need to be addressed so that the slip doesnt happen again. It is not enough to commit to quit; you need to explore the reasons behind the slip and to understand what triggered it in the first place. Without some serious soul-searching, you will be less able to avoid another slip should the same issue return.?? In the end, there is no benefit to feeling guilty about the slip. What matters is that you take it seriously and acknowledge that it is a mistake from which you have something to learn. On the other hand, if you have experienced a relapse and have now recommitted to recovery, there are several things to remember:?? Instead of feeling guilty, redouble your effort to achieve and maintain sobriety. The fact that you are recommitting means that you understand the depth of your addiction.Instead of feeling shame about your mistakes, look at them squarely and identify what you need to do to avoid making them again.Do not feel like youve lost everything and gone back to day one. Everything we do in life informs our recovery is moving forward. A person who has been sober for several days often experiences sobriety in a more profound way than someone who has been sober for years. Use that feeling to move your recovery forward. And, most importantly, remind yourself that the only true failure is giving up on yourself. Do not give up.

The Importance Of Being Earnest By Oscar Wilde - 1318 Words
Social Status in Persuasion and The Importance of Being Earnest Social status refers to a person s position or importance within a society. I have done some research and have acquired information over the way social status is addressed in both the writings of Jane Austen and Oscar Wilde. In the novel Persuasion we can see how the characters go beyond their means to uphold their title and social value. In the play The Importance of Being Earnest we can see how the social rank and wealth of a person gets them what they most desire. Persuasion by Jane Austen and The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde are similar to each other in two important ways, they both emphasise the value of a person s rank and they both show how money and the stance of a person in society played a major role in the way the person lived their life. Firstly, in both Persuasion and The Importance of Being Earnest the rank of a person in their society is seen as a superiority. In the beginning of her novel, Persuasion, Jane Austen writes about the way Sir Walter Elliot,â⬠. . . never took up any book but the Baronetage.â⬠(Austen 3). He was man who was wildly obsessed with his family s history, because he felt that in many ways his earliest patents defined him as the person he was. Reasons for change are put into three categories: Social, Technological, and Spiritual. Social Reasons for Change: population, and at the beginning of the fourteenth century, the fugue stood at seventy-three million people. A feeling of confidence in the future was one of the factors that gave rise to the Gothic era. Technological Reasons for Change: The invention of the dissimilarity plow, the new shoulder collar for horses, and more efficient tools contributed a growth in agricultural production, which until then had been quite limited. This caused peasants to flee the land because there was inadequate room for them. In the course of the eleventh century, cities began to expand, while new cities were created or reborn. This expansion made it more convenient for the peasants to move into the cities and find work. Markets were most commonly situated in the cities, and so work was better available. Another Social Reason for Change: In the time of the population boom, the central governments of Europe was inadequate, and so merchants had to set up organizations to regulate business dealings within a city. The merchant guilds ruled that none other than members of their guild could sell merchandise within a certain area of the city. Sin City A Blueprint Essay Example
Sin City: A Blueprint Essay There are several ways in which one can examine the blueprints of the Frank Millerââ¬â¢s Sin City. One can examine it using literary analysis, communication theories on media, and by looking at it through a personal vantage point. I will attempt to do all three. Before going through the analysis of the film, it is important to note the nature of its content. Violence is obviously prevalent in the film. Most of the scenes portray physical and sometimes, psychological violence. Violence in the film is not limited to certain instances but is scattered throughout the film. Therefore, it can be said that the film is by nature violent. This is an essential identification because the prevailing element of the film largely affects how it is analyzed.Because the definition of ââ¬Å"violentâ⬠may differ from person to person, there is a need to define violence as it is used in this paper. Violence will be defined as the intended infliction of physical pain to any person, whether living or dead.As was mentioned above, the prevailing message of the film is violence. Violence in itself is bad. However, it may be justified depending on the intentions of the one inflicting it and the circumstances from which it arose. The film tried to justify violence in the sense of it being necessary for survival; if one does not inflict violence on others, then one will not survive in a world that is populated by violent people. In addition, the film also justifies violence by portraying it as necessary for avenging those who have been victimized by the violence of others. This was obvious in the case of Marv. He resorted to violence because he wanted to avenge Goldieââ¬â¢s death. The question now lies on whether the filmââ¬â¢s justifications for violence really justify violence. I think not. Although the film has a plot (in contrast to other plot-less violent films) and the plot is viable enough, it has failed to justify the excessive amount of violent it portrayed. This in itself can be used as a criticism for the film because a movie has to be careful of the messages it portrays to the audience. The portrayal of unjustified violence can lead to negative repercussions. However, it should be taken into consideration that the film was adapted from a comic book. Aesthetically speaking, the movieââ¬â¢s adaptation of the comic book is commendable. The graphics are amazing and the film quality is stunning. The director really managed to capture the origins of the film by making it have that comic book quality. Despite its stunning graphics, though, the plot seems quite flimsy. It tends to be too dragging at times and as was mentioned above, there is no real justification for the excessive violence involved in it.In addition, following the cultivation theory of mass communication, it can be said that the movie, by its portrayal of massive violence, has the capability to create a ââ¬Å"mean world syndromeâ⬠amongst those who watch it. This idea propag ates a view of the world in which everyone cannot be trusted and therefore the world is dangerous and ââ¬Å"meanâ⬠. This view is not necessarily false but it feeds peopleââ¬â¢s paranoia and can cause them to believe that the reality they see in movies is really their reality. Depending on the amount of exposure they have to the film, their behavior could also be affected such that they too would act in the way the characters in the film act. I know Iââ¬â¢m taking it to the extreme with this idea but it is still probable. When Tarantino was interviewed regarding the huge amount of violence contained in their film, he said that this only shows how much they are in touch with the darker side of life. It is true that some of the things portrayed in the film may happen but it is not really the reality of our world. In contrast to the film, perpetrators of explicit violence such as depicted there does not remain unpunished and they definitely do not emerge as winners. In additi on, many would argue against their logic to avenge violence by using violence. This only results in a downward cycle of events.Lastly, let us discuss my personal vantage point regarding the film. When I first heard the title of the film, it reminded of me of the video game Vice City where there are missions to be accomplished for the crime lord. Cars are stolen; people are run over and shot under the auspice of a mission. Without the benefit of seeing Sin City before, my observation from the scene selections on the screen is this movie would be about sex, drugs, crime, gangs, and much aggression with a Who Done It style. I was right. These were the main themes of the film and it was really like the video game Vice City. One is given license to commit crime with the justification that others are corrupt anyone so they deserve to be murdered, tortured, and what not. As I have already mentioned, this is a problematic ideology. In the end, I would like to focus on Hartiganââ¬â¢s chara cter, which was played by Bruce Willis. Hartigan was dealing with the act of crime against a young girl ââ¬â Nancy Callahan age 11 who had been kidnapped. During his search for Nancy, Hartigan was dealing with a life threatening illness of his own and displays somewhat of a defeatist attitude and much aggression toward his partner Bob who is corrupt. Although Hartigan is against all the odds, he continues as if he needs to be a hero.It can be said that Hartigan is the noblest character in the movie because through the end, the stood by his principles and did not give in to the corruption that inflicted the rest of the characters in the movie. It is sad, however, that at the end of his life Hartigan dies a hero only in his mind. No one will really know the risks his took to save Nancys life.

How To Take Notes
How To Take Notes It seems that it would be easy to write down stuff in class. That learning how to take notes would be a waste of time. However, the opposite is true. If you learn how to take notes effectively and efficiently, youââ¬â¢ll save yourself hours of study time just by observing a few simple tricks. If you dont like this method, then try out the Cornell System for taking notes! Choose Appropriate PaperThe right paper can mean the difference between complete frustration in class and organized notes. To take notes effectively, choose a sheet of loose, clean, lined paper, preferably college-ruled. There are a couple reasons for this choice:Choosing loose paper to take notes allows you to rearrange your notes in a binder if necessary, lend them easily to a friend, and remove and replace a page if it gets damaged.Using college-ruled paper means that the spaces between the lines are smaller, allowing you to write more per page, which is advantageous when youââ¬â¢re studying a lot of material. It wonââ¬â¢t seem as much, and thus, as overwhelming.Use Pencil and Skip LinesNothing will make you more frustrated than taking notes and having to draw arrows from new content to a related idea your teacher was talking about 20 minutes ago. Thatââ¬â¢s why itââ¬â¢s important to skip lines. If your teacher brings up something new, youââ¬â¢ll have a place to squ eeze it in. And, if you take your notes in pencil, your notes will stay neat if you make a mistake and you wonââ¬â¢t have to rewrite everything just to make sense of the lecture. Label Your PageYou donââ¬â¢t have to use a clean sheet of paper for every new note-taking session if you use appropriate labels. Start with the topic of the discussion (for study purposes later), fill in the date, class, chapters associated with the notes and teacherââ¬â¢s name. At the end of your notes for the day, draw a line crossing the page so youââ¬â¢ll have a very clear demarcation of each dayââ¬â¢s notes. During the next lecture, use same format so your binder is consistent.Use an Organizational SystemSpeaking of organization, use one in your notes. Many people use an outline (I.II.III. A.B.C. 1.2.3.) but you can use circles or stars or whatever symbols youd like, as long as you stay consistent. If your teacher is scattered and doesnââ¬â¢t really lecture in that format, then just organize new ideas with numbers, so you donââ¬â¢t get one long paragraph of loosely-related content.Listen for ImportanceSome of the stuff your teacher says is irrelevant, but much of it needs remembering. So how do you decipher what to put down in your notes and what to disregard? Listen for importance by picking up dates, new terms or vocabulary, concepts, names, and explanations of ideas. If your teacher writes it down anywhere, he or she wants you to know it. If she talks about it for 15 minutes, sheââ¬â¢s gonna quiz you on it. If he repeats it several times in the lecture, youââ¬â¢re responsible. Put Content Into Your Own WordsLearning how to take notes begins with learning how to paraphrase and summarize. You will learn new material better if you put it into your own words. When your teacher waxes wordy about Leningrad for 25 minutes, summarize the main idea into a few sentences youââ¬â¢ll be able to remember. If you try to write everything down word for word, youââ¬â¢ll miss stuff, and confuse yourself. Listen attentively, then write.Write LegiblyIt kind of goes without saying, but Iââ¬â¢m gonna say it anyway. If your penmanship has ever been compared to chicken scratch, you better work on it. Youââ¬â¢ll thwart your taking notes efforts if you canââ¬â¢t read what youââ¬â¢ve written! Force yourself to write clearly. I guarantee that you will not remember the exact lecture when it comes to exam time, so your notes are often going to be your only lifeline. Note Taking Tips Sit near the front of the class so you dont get distractedBring the appropriate supplies, good college-ruled paper and a pen or pencil that will allow you to write legibly and easily.Keep a folder or binder for every class, so youre more likely to keep your notes organized.

How Long Before the SAT Should You Prep 4 Key Tips
How Long Before the SAT Should You Prep 4 Key Tips SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips I get this question from students a lot, and it's definitely an important one: how long before the SAT should you begin preparing for it? Moreover, how long is too long (you won't remember the material)? And how long is too short (you won't have enough time to study)? You'll need to know how to answer these questions if you wish to study effectively. Our four most important tips will help you determine when you should start studying for the SAT. Tip 1: Figure Out How Many Hours You Can Study per Week First things first: how busy of a student are you? Do you only have an hour every Thursday night to study because all your free time is taken up by classes and activities? Or are you the type who can easily free up three hours a day five days a week to study for the SAT? As a rule of thumb, you should spend at least 10 hours on SAT prep. If you can't study for more than 10 hours, it's rarely worth it to take the test. Considering that the SAT itself can take up six or more hours of your time (if you count driving time and immediate prep, that is), it just seems silly not to spend at least this amount of time studying for it! A much better baseline to use is 40 hours of prep. In this case, every hour can substantially help you. By contrast, a full-on, supercharged study regimen, like a boot camp, is closer to 100 hours. Here is a chart of possible SAT study times. Especially good combos are marked with an asterisk: Study Hrs per Week Minimum Baseline Full Study 1 hour 2 months 8 months Not recommended 2 hours 1 month 4 months* 10 months 5 hours 2 weeks 1.5 months* 4 months 10 hours 1 week 1 month* 2 months* 20 hours (summer) Not recommended 2 weeks 1 month* It's important to figure out how many hours you specifically will need to improve by in order to get the ACT score you want. Here's what to do: first, set an SAT goal score. This score is the one most likely to get you accepted into all the schools you're applying to. To find this number, follow the instructions in our guide to a good SAT score. Next, figure out your baseline score by taking an official SAT practice test. This score is essentially a starting point for your SAT prep. Once you have both your baseline and goal scores, it's time to calculate how long you'll need to study. To do this, simply subtract your baseline score from your goal score. In general, the more time you devote to studying, the higher the score you increase you can expect to have. Here are our estimates for the total number of hours you'll need to prep based on the SAT score improvement you want: 0-30 point improvement: 10 hours 30-70 point improvement: 20 hours 70-130 point improvement: 40 hours 130-200 point improvement: 80 hours 200-330 point improvement: 150 hours+ Now that you know how many hours you'll need to study for the SAT, you can calculate possible weekly or monthly schedules based on how much free time you have each week. For example, if I want to improve my SAT score by 100 points, I'll need to study for around 40 hours. Thus, I could study about four hours a week if I have two and a half months before test day, or 10 hours a week if I only have a month left. To get a better idea of how many hours you could have at max available to you in a week, month, or year for studying, you can read through our article on how many minutes/seconds/hours there are in a day/week/year. Tip 2: Pick a Convenient Test Date Choosing an SAT test date that gives you plenty of time to study and works well with your schedule is vital for quality prep. Typically, it's best to choose a date at least a few months ahead of time so you can easily tweak your schedule to make time for study sessions. If you choose a date that's very soon (i.e., less than a month before the test), you won't have as much time to study or rearrange your schedule. (On a related note, picking a date early also means avoiding having to pay late registration fees.) Furthermore, pick a date that doesn't have much going on around it. This way you won't have to shift your activities too much and will be able to dedicate more time to studying without having to worry about other obligations or events going on. Tip 3: Don't Study Too Far Ahead or You'll Forget What You've Learned In your SAT study plan, there are some skills I don't recommend studying hard until you're closer to your test date. Study them too early and you're more likely to forget them! That said, some things are good to start studying early. These are the skills and content you're less likely to forget later on, such as the following: Vocabulary (I still remember mine from when I took the SAT!) Basic math There are some things I don't recommend studying more than a year before your test. Study this early and you'll forget more than 50% of what you learned! Instead, it's better to concentrate the time you have on the following: Learning key test-taking strategies, such as the process of elimination Taking official practice tests Finally, these are the things I don't recommend doing until at least two months before your test: Getting used to the SAT format with multiple practice tests Doing one or more dry runs so you can get used to the length (and fatigue) of the test In summary, it's rarely too early to start, but if you're thinking of starting some intense prep more than a year in advance, think carefully about when you approach new topics. Tip 4: Try to Study for At Least 2 Weeks in Total If you've only got a week or two to study, the information you learn won't have enough time to sink in. Ultimately, you have to give your brain adequate time to retain new SAT concepts! So try to study, at a minimum, at least two weeks before your test. A month or longer is, of course, even better. If test day's coming up, though, and you have very, very little time to study, don't freak out! You can still get a good score as long as you utilize the time you do have wisely. Our guide on how to cram for the SAT tells you exactly what to do in this scenario. What's Next? Planning to spend a year or more studying for the SAT? Analyse the difference between Economic Growth & Economic Development Essay
Analyse the difference between Economic Growth & Economic Development. What are the problems concerning measuring economic development Illustrate your answer using case studies - Essay Example Economic development is determined by the quality of life that the population enjoys due to the improvement of the various aspects life. This improvement can cause the region to realize economic growth. Economic growth, however, has a much narrower outlook of than economic development, in that; it refers to the increase in the value of products from the various sectors involved in the economy of a nation. The growth is usually expressed using the Gross Domestic Product GDP. When economic growth is realized in a region, it is not guaranteed that this growth will result in development. Another significant difference apart from the definition of the two terms is that, economic growth takes one dimension in that it is centered on increasing the GDP of a region. This is, however, different in economic development, since the latter involves a wider approach in that it is involved in the income created in the population and the improvement of the quality of life of individuals, since social amenities and structures are also improved (Capello and Nijkamp, 2008, 173). This will result in a positive effect in the lives of the population. Economic growth, however, is narrower in that growth will not necessarily have a positive impact on the population. The two phenomena are also different in that economic growth is quantitative. This is so since the phenomenon mostly deals with numbers in that the growth is translated by the figures and percentages. Economic development in contrast is measured in the quality since the development is translated to the improved livelihoods of the population. Economic development is, therefore, measured qualitatively (Arestis and Thirlwall, 2006, 109). Another noteworthy variation between the two is that economic development is irregular and spontaneous. It causes changes in the equilibrium that is

Market Challengers, Market Followers and Market Nichers Essay
Market Challengers, Market Followers and Market Nichers - Essay Example In Information Technology markets, however the companies do not hesitate in openly comparing their features with those of the competition by publishing named comparison tables between specific models - like Apple Macintosh compared with Microsoft Windows, Red Hat Linux compared with Microsoft Windows, IBM storage model compared with HP storage model, etc. These comparisons are printed in brochures that are sent to the decision making personnel of organizations through channel partners. The author has come across decision making documents written by IT managers in comparing between such companies by carefully studying what each vendor in competition presents in comparison with others. The brochures indicate kind of cut throat competition among vendors whereby the negative parts of the competition are highlighted promptly by each vendor - the fight is to influence the decision maker as much as possible in their favour. Example of Market Follower Market followers do not attempt to achieve drastic changes in consumer attitudes towards new innovations because they are scared of the back firing of such strategies. However, Banbury and Mitchell (1995) argue that "firms that define themselves as pioneers tend to garner greater market share than those that define themselves as followers". In Croatia a number of local food outlets try to design their fast food products in line with popular chains like McDonald and Pizza Hut but none of them attract consumers to the extent companies like McDonald and Pizza Hut are able to, in spite of keeping lower prices or offering discount schemes. The author himself feels reluctance in going to such joints given their strategy of just following the established brands and only visits them just for occasional change of taste. As per Banbury and Mitchell (1995), even slight innovations in established products can improve the market share of companies if they are able to tangibly demonstrate them to the consumers. Example of Market Nicher The concept of niche market positioning to establish: (a) Organization's own niche markets (b) Consumers possessing distinctive choices (c) Socio-demographic positions associated with consumers and their corresponding choices (d) Niche products matching consumer choices [Hannan and Carroll et al. 2003] In Croatia, Oracle is perceived to be targeting niche markets. In the author's auditing assignments, it was discovered that Oracle's products are priced much higher than the competitive products by Microsoft and IBM by virtue of certain features that are unmatched by the competition and the choice of some IT managers running mission critical applications who never look forward to any other database products (they call it RDBMS) than Oracle. Also, Oracle is found to be non-flexible in their pricing strategies and kind of unwilling to compete in the market segments where Microsoft & IBM are popular. The author could

Nitrogen fixation Essay -- essays research papers
The growth of all organisms depends on the availability of mineral nutrients, and none is more important than nitrogen, which is required in large amounts as an essential component of proteins, nucleic acids and other cellular constituents. There is an abundant supply of nitrogen in the earth's atmosphere - nearly 79% in the form of N2 gas. However, N2 is unavailable for use by most organisms because there is a triple bond between the two nitrogen atoms, making the molecule almost inert. In order for nitrogen to be used for growth it must be "fixed" (combined) in the form of ammonium (NH4) or nitrate (NO3) ions. The weathering of rocks releases these ions so slowly that it has a neglible effect on the availability of fixed nitrogen. So, nitrogen is often the limiting factor for growth and biomass production in all environments where there is suitable climate and availability of water to support life. Microorganisms have a central role in almost all aspects of nitrogen availability and thus for life support on earth: some bacteria can convert N2 into ammonia by the process termed nitrogen fixation; these bacteria are either free-living or form symbiotic associations with plants or other organisms (e.g. termites, protozoa) other bacteria bring about transformations of ammonia to nitrate, and of nitrate to N2 or other nitrogen gases many bacteria and fungi degrade organic matte...

Juveniles in Jail Into days society there is a lot of debate and discussion on whether or not Juveniles should be sentenced to life in prison. The Cause For The Vietnam War - 1442 Words
Among the causes for the Vietnam War are the Western fear of communism, the remnants of nineteenth-century colonialism, and tensions caused by World War Two and the Cold War, but these causes could easily have been circumvented and the Vietnam War prevented. As is often the case with wars, one of the most influential factors in the causation of the Vietnam War was fear, especially fear of communism and social upheaval. The anti-communist policies of Western culture had the greatest direct influence in causing the Vietnam War, but were not enough reason to send troops to the area. The United States and Western Europe had similar attitudes toward communist ideologies, with political leaders implementing policies that were intended to limitâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In this way, the Truman administration attempted to justify its hostility toward all communist states; the United Statesââ¬â¢ involvement in the Vietnam War stems directly from the paranoia of communism that caused Tr uman to implement this policy. It is clear that the American government under the duress of the slow expansion of communism felt that using force to prevent the spread of an opposing economic and political structure was perfectly justifiable. However, this policy likely led to more disastrous military conflict, such as the Vietnam War, was based primarily on fears of a conflicting ideology, and had little evidence to back up the fears that may otherwise have been rational. The Western policies of containment exacerbated the issue of communism and its spread through Asia, perhaps even enabling it through worsening foreign relations with countries that otherwise posed no threat. Of course, the paranoia of communism that gripped much of Western culture was in no way the sole cause of the Vietnam War. The French colonization of Vietnam in the late 1800s was a major cause, but that colonization was unnecessary and indefensible, and therefore the conflict could easily have been avoided. I n the later half of the nineteenth century, France was seeking to gain territory to keep pace with other

Importance of Symbols and Gestures Free Essays
Signs ,Symblos and Gestures: ?A sign is something we directly encounter, yet at the same time it refers to something else. Thunder is a sign of rain. A punch in the nose is a sign of anger. We will write a custom essay sample on Importance of Symbols and Gestures or any similar topic only for you Order Now An arrow is a sign of whatever it points toward. ?Symbols expand the notions of signs and signals. Symbols are characterized by rich meanings that are multiple, fluid, diverse, layered, complex, and frequently predicated on metaphorical associations that assert an analogy between things from different contexts that normally may not be connected. Given that the referents of symbols tend to be general, abstract, and ambiguous, their personally or socially constructed significations may not be apparent except to those who make them. ?Gestures are present early in development, and are used to communicate before a child has the ability to vocalize. Once the child has the ability to speak, gestures are used to express thoughts that are not expressed vocally; eventually, gestures complement vocalized ideas. Importance : The use of gestures ,symbols and signs paves the way for learning speech. Before a child can vocalize, they have the ability to understand language and communicate through deictic and iconic gestures. Early on, children use deictic gestures, which are seen around ten months old, and consist of pointing to or holding things up. Iconic gestures are used by children at eleven to twelve months old, and capture the features of their referents. Iconic gestures convey predicate information, like punching the air to refer to fighting. According to Ozcaliskan Goldin-Meadow (2004), at fourteen months old, children use a vast majority of gestures that are usually produced along with verbal communication. At eighteen months, half of an average childââ¬â¢s speech is accompanied by gestures. The ways in which gestures are used are an indication of the developmental or conceptual ability of children Symbolic gesturing yields positive rather than negative effects on learning to talk. The incompatibility hypothesis, a belief that has been dominant for decades, states that the different odalities of communication (gestures, manual signs, speech, etc) are in competition of one another, and therefore learning one modality will suppress the acquisition of the other modality. Because of this hypothesis, in the past parents were advised not to use manual signs, as it would be detrimental to the childââ¬â¢s acquisition of natural speech (Loncke, 2013). On the contrary to this incompatibility hypothesis, in the absence of l anguage, encouraging the use of gestures will not delay the verbal ability of children, rather, the experience of gesturing has a facilitative effect on early syntactical development. Communication is multimodal, meaning there is more than one channel used for communication (gesture, speech, picture, etc), which strengthens the overall communicative interaction. For example, speaking a word and pointing to a picture reinforce the communicative meaning and intent of the speaker (Loncke, 2013). Gesturing facilitates and enriches the relationship between parent and child. Between nine and eighteen months, the child, lacking full vocal abilities, will want to communicate with the parent, who must determine what message the child is trying to convey. It is during this time that gesturing becomes important. This is supported by the compatibility hypothesis, which condones the use of multimodal forms of communication, and claims that learning gestures will not hinder a childââ¬â¢s acquisition of normal speech and language. For example, a mother bathing her eighteen month old daughter might be unaware that the water is too hot, but the child could indicate this through a gesture, rather than try to formulate a time-consuming verbal explanation How to cite Importance of Symbols and Gestures, Essay examples

Getting Value Business Intelligence Systems ââ¬Myassignmenthelp.Com
Question: Discuss About The Getting Value Business Intelligence Systems? Answer: Introduction In the starting of the 19th century the first bank was set up in Australia. From then till today there has been large number of reforms in this regard. In this 21st century technology has taken the reigns in its hands and all the operations are managed on the technical line. There are four big banks in Australia today on which the four pillar policy was framed that prevents merger of these banks with each other. These banks are Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank Limited and Westpac Banking Corporation. These are the top banks in Australia nd dominates the overall banking sector. The importance of the banks over the past years has increase and baks today are contributing more than half of the total assets of the economy. Apart from providing basic services to the consumers that is lending of money, and management of deposits, they provide large number of other services also today that ranges from fund management to asset management. They also provide insurance related services to the consumers and also big companies. These banks are required to follow the rules and regulations that have been set up by the law framing body of the country and all the actions must be in line with the same. The strong financial position that the banks hold today reflects the changes that has occurred in the overall banking sector from the time when the first bank was set up in the 19th century. Today there are as many as 53 banks operating in the Australian financial sector(Adapa Roy, 2017). None of these banks are held by the government, few of them are owned by foreign parties and 14 banks are owned by the Australian. The government is not allowed to hold any bank to prevent them from controlling the economy. The banks are forced to follow the regulations that have been set up the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA). These banks holds a large amount of market share and that is thus controlling the overall economy in some way or the other. The overall analysis of these bank, from the past to their future presence is discussed in this report briefly. The key regulating parties of the banking sector includes the RBA, the APRA and the ASIC. They frame rules and regulations on which the banking system works. They issue guidelines which is mandatory for all the banks to follow. Any company who wants to function in Australia needs to have the permission of the APRA and then only they can begin their overall operations. These standards that are set by these institutions follows a large number of topics that relates to capital adequacy, management of the funds, securitization, maintain proper quality credits and many other. They set down limitations that the banks have to follow, and in case the consumers are not happy they can launch their complaints to the respective authorities. If the banks do not comply with these provisions, then their license can also be cancelled. So in order to avoid the same, these rules must be strictly followed and all the decisions of the banks should be taken keeping them in view. This helps in effective management of the accounts and make sure that there are very less amount of errors involved in the same. The inter-governmental cooperation from other parts of the world has also improved a lot. The Australian government has a very friendly attitude towards its counter parties in other parts of the world. All these countries believe in forwarding a helping hand as and when needed. The Australian government stands for better harmonization of relationship in the Asian pacific region. This helps in better development of the world relationship and also open new business opportunities for these companies and also the economy is also benefited. It opens the option of third party funding which the banks can secure from other companies that are operating in foreign land and in times of recession it is of great help.; Research The first bank was framed in the early 19th century. By the end of the late nineteenth century during the Victorian era, when there was a situation of huge depression, a large number of colonial banks failed. This was a huge blow to the banking sector. A new legislation was framed in 1901, to supervise these banks and protect them, and manage their overall operations. New rules and regulations were framed after the Second World War. The government was not allowed to own any of these banks. People assumed that if government had the power to control the banks than they might be able to control the overall economy also. In order to fight the same, strict guidelines were framed to control the overall banking sector and provide the people a basis on which they can judge the performances of these banks. However as there were many changes in the overall scenario of the world banking sector, deregulation became the order of the day and many changes were brought in. It made the need of strong er norms more evident and clear for these banks(Anginer Kunt, 2014).The overall banking balance sheet has grown at an average rate of 13 percent since 1985. It is a reflection of the strong effect of the banking regulation on the economy and the presence of the strong demand and supply effect of the economy. The overall banking scenario was very badly hit because of the great depression that occurred in the late 1990s. There was a huge decrease in the overall banking home loan demands and that caused a lot of loss to these banking companies. But since the companies have got over depression, they are trying to make more profit and generate more revenue by getting third party funding for their banks and its management. There has been huge growth since the time common wealth banking norms were issued on the basis of world banking rules. The growth has been spread over a time line and is visible in the strong market position that these banks hold in todays time and the overall effect t hat they have on the economy of the company(Arnott, et al., 2017). There was no influence from the government also, as they were not allowed to control these banks and hence the overall function was dynamic and stable. This was the past of the banking industry in Australia and since then a lot of it has changed and the same is stated below. There has been huge growth and development in the Australian banks since 1990. There has been introduction of Automatic Teller machines and other devices that helped in infusing the technology with the everyday banking services. This was very helpful for the customers. Deregulation became the order of the day in 1960, and affected a large number of banks very badly. In 1980, new banks were established and there was fresh innovation and development. There were a lot of reward that were associated with the overall deregulation as it allowed many credit unions and budding societies to become banks without going into mutation. The government of Australia had launched the four pillars policy as per which the top four banks were not allowed to merge with each other and had to maintain their individual status. This was extremely helpful in the long run and made sure that the power was not transferred to a single banking company. The government was not given any power and was not allowed to control these banks in anyways. The last government owned bank was old out in 2011, and after that these banks were privatized. Strict guidelines were issued for the same to be followed by these banks. Analysis The present banking sector is dominated by the top four banks that hold most of the market share and contribute the most to the economy. They are guided by the four pillar policy by which they are not allowed to merge with each other but they can merge with other banks and small institutions. These acquisitions and mergers have helped in the growth of these banks all over and also in improving their overall market share. They are extremely huge and as per the world banking ranks, they are together ranked at 80th position and in case of the market share they have a 50 rank. They contribute 100 percent to the total share of the GDP and have around $960billion of assets that are reflected in their books in combination. Their pre-tax income is around 21 percent and over the years they have been extremely profitable. Apart from providing normal banking services, the major source of income of this bank comes from non routine activities like asset management and fund management. There is fe w other banks also there apart from these top banks whose main area of focus is the management of the retail sector and hence are often known as regional banks(Bakir, 2017).These regional banks are a group of five banks that are owned by the Australian. Over the years they have tried to bring a large amount of changes in their functioning by providing better services to the customers at discount. They together contribute to around 8 percent of the total Australian GDP. Apart from all these, there are few banks that are owned by foreigners, they contribute to around 20 percent of the total GDP. Previously these banks tried to focus on the sale of services and failed very badly. But now apart from focusing on the whole sale market, they are trying to indulge in providing better retail oriented services to the consumers at very low prices. The largest owned foreign banks makes a contribution of around 2.5 percent to the total economy and is also the eight largest domestic bank in Australia. The major activities of these banks include fund management and insurance but they also indulge in other type of activities also that will help them in generating funds. Till today, there are around 53 banks that are functioning in the Australian economy and none of these banks are owned by government officials. This makes the overall banking system very strong and reliable(Dowding, 2017). Now if we go for the future banking system, there are several changes that are anticipated to occur that will make the overall system more strong and efficient. These few changes are To infuse the overall work done with the cultural aspects of the economy To bring more changes with regard to new innovations and development To optimize the overall chain value so that more revenue is generated To make the overall customer management system more efficient and less erroneous It is important for the banks to introduce all these changes in their system because in the long run it will become very important to do the same. These changes are needed so that the bugs from the banking system are removed and the entire system becomes more stable. It will be helpful to the company and also to the customers(Kohtamki, 2017). It is important that these companies are able to able to survive this transition phase form the traditional banking system to more technological advance one. If the companies are not able to survive this phase they wont be able to perform good. In the long run it is important that new updates should take place every now and then. These will be necessary to keep the companies in par with the other world banks and make the entire system top notch to the global level. It is important to develop better relation with the customers that will help in better management of the resources overall. It is also necessary that these banks are able to escape th e future of commodity traps and dont sell their service as they are selling some products to the people(Mayntz, 2017).These services are there to help the customers, hence commercialization is important but the overall essence of banking must always be there. This is the most important thing that the banks must keep in mind. The companies also need to improve their overall management by effectively combining their needs demands and the needs of the consumer with their resources, culture and other attributes. These are few of the basic changes that might be required in the future. As of now the banking sector is a growing economy and with changes in technology and overall procedures better changes will occur, that will make the system more efficient. Recommendations So on the basis of the above analysis it can be said that the main need of these companies is to not commercialize the services and provide quality services to the consumers. The consumers must be given their dues accordingly and must be provided the best service that will help in their growth and development. It is important that these companies are able to able to survive this transition phase form the traditional banking system to more technological advance one. It is important to develop better relation with the customers that will help in better management of the resources overal(Trieu, 2017). New technological advances must be done to make the entire process more easy. It is also important to see that there must be simplification of the banking processes so that the customers are able to understand it easily and deal with the same without issues. Proper audit of the banking companies must be done as per the stated rules and regulations so that people are aware of the true pictu re of the financials of the company. They can take their important decisions on the basis of the same. Conclusion After the entire analysis it can be concluded that the banking system in Australia ahs improved a lot over the years. There has been huge growth from the first bank that was formed in 19th century till today. It will be ok for the banking companies to make sure that retain their current position and bring it new changes so that the future is better. The banking companies must be operated independently and the government should also see to it that the overall norms that it has framed for the same must be free from all kind of errors. The customers instill their faith in these banking companies and thus it is their responsibility to provide them the best services(Yates, 2017). The present scenario in respect to these banking companies is bright and with few changes the companies will be able to improve a lot and will be to inculcate more changes in the system. The government should see to it that there is more growth of domestic banks rather than foreign owned banks and that there are steps taken for the betterment of the same. Overall the banking system is effective and strong and free from errors. Refrences Adapa, S. Roy, S., 2017. Copyright Laws Definitions
A copyright is a law that protects the ideas and expressions of people from being stolen or used by other people. Copyrights are usually prepared for literary forms of works, photographic material, musical or song compositions, films or motion pictures and sound recordings.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Copyright Laws Definitions specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Copyright laws are designed to protect the expressed idea in the forms stated above and not the idea or piece of information itself (Australian Government, 2009). A copyright law is viewed to be in effect once any of the following two conditions are satisfied which are; creating an original piece of work and the use of the original piece of work in a tangible form such as a book or picture (Standler, 2009). The copyright laws were originally formulated in the United Kingdom after being derived from the common law known as the Statute of Anne 1709. The r ights that were covered in the statute gave the authors or designers of literary or artistic works the right to control how the public used their material. The law also gave the creator of the work the right to be identified as the main designer or author of the copyright work. The author had the exclusive right to claim the original idea or expression used in creating the literary, artistic, or musical work (Copy right service, 2009). The types of works that are covered by the copyright law are literary works such as song lyrics, book manuscripts, computer programs and business/academic manuals and documents. Dramatic works covered by the copyright laws include works such as drama, plays or poems while musical works include song lyrics, music compositions and song recordings. Copyrights for artistic works include creating laws for works such as photographs, paintings, maps, architectural designs, sculptures and technical diagrams. Interpreting when to enforce a copyright will invol ve copyrighting the tangible medium of the idea instead of the idea or expression itself. To explain this statement, an idea for a book cannot be protected but the actual contents of the book are viable for copyright protection.Advertising Looking for essay on intellectual property? The author or designer of any copyright material has the exclusive right to make copies of their work or reproduce it when they feel the need to, they have the right to prepare derivative works such as adapting the material to suit a particular need, to distribute the reproduced work to the general public or the intended market by publishing the work, renting or leasing the copyrighted material or selling the material to the mentioned public or the target market. The author of the copyright also has the exclusive right to perform the work that comes with the copyright in a public manner as well as display the work in a public format (Standler, 2009). The duration of a copyright will be determined by the type of work to be copyrighted, the availability of the work to the public, and the status of the author or creator of the work. Literary and artistic works such as photographs, films and songs have a copyright duration of 70 years that is effected at the end of the calendar year. Sound recordings have a copyright duration of 50 years from the end of the calendar year when the work was originally created by the author or when the work was made available to the public. Copyright laws have restricted acts that are deemed to be punishable by the laws that govern the copyright (Davies, 2010). Restricted acts to copyrights include reproducing the original work of the author without their consent, leasing/renting, issu ing, or lending the work to the public without the knowledge of the author and performing the copyrighted such as a song or musical composition without the consent of the owner. The acts that are allowed by the copyright laws include all aspects encompassed by fair dealing which describes the copyright acts that are allowed as long as they do not infringe on the authorââ¬â¢s original work.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Copyright Laws Definitions specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The permissible acts include conducting research activities using the copyright material, using information in the original work for educational purposes, incorporating copyright work for news reporting and criticism purposes, using the copyright for the purpose of statutory enquiries, parliamentary proceedings, and judicial cases and hearings. Other permissible acts include producing back up copies of the work for personal use which mostly applies in computer programming software and hardware programs. The act of playing a musical copyright work for a non profit making organization is also permissible (Copyright Service, 2009). Copyright laws were formulated to deal with cases of plagiarism or theft of ideas/information from text books, visual images or motion pictures and music recordings. Plagiarism is described as taking someone elseââ¬â¢s original ideas and using the ideas to create a piece of work without providing a proper reference to the idea. Plagiarizing work that has a copyright is at times viewed to be a copyright infringement on the authorââ¬â¢s original work but in some cases it is not an infringement if the author is dead and the material is older than 100 years. For example, any work created by William Shakespeare is used to develop literary material or dramatic and artistic works. This will not qualify as copyright infringement because Shakespeareââ¬â¢s works are too old but it would still be plagiarism if Shakespeare is not cited or referenced in the work (Plagiarism Checker, 2006). Copyright infringement occurs when the work of someone is used or reproduced without the consent of the author or designer of that original work. Students have the copyrights to their assignments as long as they have provided the original idea or information that was used to create the work. They are however liable for infringement if they do not give the proper credit to the source of information that is not originally theirs (Coopman Lull, 2008). Derivative work occurs when a person takes copyrighted material and changes the content of the material to reflect a different idea.Advertising Looking for essay on intellectual property? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The author of the derivative work is therefore seen to share a copyright with the author of the original work and does not have an entitlement to full ownership of the copyright (Plagiarism Checker, 2006). The restrictions placed on copyright are similar to those placed for dealing with plagiarism cases. The University of Maryland policies regard plagiarism to be the use of someone elseââ¬â¢s written work which includes using phrases or diagrams from another source without proper citation and also the paraphrasing of ideas or information contained in written works. The policies also define plagiarism as the use of all or part of a literary work such as a poem, a musical composition, a film or an artistic work without giving the proper credit to the author (UMUC, 2010). The restrictions which are set forth for dealing with cases of plagiarism, or cheating in academic institutions include a reduction in the overall grade of the work found to have been plagiarised, a grade of zero o r F is given for the plagiarized work, a requirement to redo the work that will see the student getting a lower grade, a discussion with the instructor to determine that will see the offender redoing the work after which it will be remarked by the instructor with the appropriate grade but with a record of the plagiarism case, suspension or expulsion from the academic institution for a student caught with several cases of academic dishonesty, the opening of a disciplinary file or record for the student if caught with cases of dishonesty, plagiarism or academic dishonesty (Moon, 2005). The restrictions that are placed for copyright materials are divided into two parts which are concerned with the freedom given to organs of information such as the media to publish reports or information that will serve the public interest and the use of specialized media organs such as newspapers, articles, magazines and newsletters to publicise the copyrighted information. The reproduction of informat ion that is deemed to be copyright material is viewed to be free except where the law places a stipulation for the notice of expression or the reservation of rights to use the copyrighted material (UNESCO, 2010). A restriction that is present in all copyright laws deals with making the reasonable use of works of another person by incorporating quotation marks, paraphrasing excerpts from the original work or using the work for criticism, reporting and research purposes. This restriction is referred to as fair use (UNESCO, 2010). The UK law on copyrights was amended in 2003 to limit the number of permissible circumstances that are allowed for using copyrighted material. The amendments were meant to be used by academic institutions and other institutions that used literary, artistic, musical and dramatic works. The amendments saw the addition of restrictions to permitted uses of copyright materials which are that the work will be used for non-commercial purposes and the use of the copy rights will require acknowledgement of the original author (Mackenzie Walker, 2008).
